About this release

DAT 6807 and 6808 introduced a new Digital Certificate which caused subsequent Trust issues for some VirusScan installations. Symptoms of affected machines could vary from logged errors to missed detections. DAT 6809 or later in conjunction with this hotfix, provide a resolution.

Nodes previously repaired with Hotfix 793640 do not require this Hotfix, although applying this Hotfix overtop will not cause any harmful effects.

For full details on the issue, see (McAfee) KnowledgeBase article KB76004.

Installation instructions

To use this release, you must have VirusScan Enterprise 8.8.0 software installed on the computer you intend to update with this release.

·         This release does not work with earlier versions of McAfee VirusScan Enterprise software.

·         A reboot might be needed to fully load the system drivers into memory.    The package installation does not force the reboot.

Standalone instructions

To install this release directly to a system, the user must have installation rights.

1.    Extract the HotFix files to a temporary folder on your hard drive.

2.    Double-click the file VSE88HF793781.EXE inside the temporary folder created in Step 1.

3.    Follow the instructions of the installation wizard.

ePolicy Orchestrator instructions

To install this release across managed systems.

1.    Open the ePolicy Orchestrator console and add the package VSE88HF793781.zip to your repository. Refer to Checking in Packages Manually in the ePolicy Orchestrator online Help, for instructions on adding a package to the repository. The package type for this install is "Products or Updates (.ZIP)".

2.    Deploy the HotFix to the appropriate client systems with an agent update.

Verifying installation

We recommend to always reboot the client system prior to validating the installation is successfully installed. Check any of the items listed below for verification that the HotFix installed.

·         After property information has been collected by the ePolicy Orchestrator agent, the client system details display the Fix property as HotFix number 793781. The system properties can also be queried in SQL.

·         On the client system, look for a registry key entry Hotfix_793781 in the HKey_Local_Machine\Software\McAfee\DesktopProtection tree.

NOTE: On a 64-bit OS, this entry may be located under the HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Wow6432Node\McAfee\DesktopProtection tree.

·         Nodes that are running DATs prior to 6807 will not require the hotfix, and will not display the Fix property as 793781.

·         Nodes that have an unresponsive McAfee Agent will require a non-ePolicy Orchestrator deployment to apply the hotfix.

·         If they are present, DAT 6807 and DAT 6808 will be removed as a part of this Hotfix, and a stub DAT will be installed in their place.  The stub DAT will carry the version number 1111, and will trigger a full DAT update next time the McAfee Agent update task runs. Minimal protection is offered while the stub DAT (version 1111) is in use.

·         This Hotfix will not alter the current behavior of the update process. Nodes will continue to use established tasks and repository sitelists to download DATs.

·         The stub DAT will show as out of compliance in the ePO console reports, listing as DAT version 1111.
